The following changes have been made to the data.

Asset Classes

Starting with the data from 2001 returns, the Internal Revenue Service changed the reported asset classes. The asset classes, in thousands, are now:

1-500
500-1,000
1,000-5,000
5,000-10,000
10,000-25,000
25,000-50,000
50,000-100,000
100,000-250,000
250,000-500,000
500,000-2,500,000
over 2,500,000

In previous years:

The data at the lower end of the scale was divided into 1-100, 100-250, and 250-500.
The top range was 250,000 and over.

Reclassification of Tax Items

The "Taxes Paid" data element reports license fees and other taxes a business incurs, but not income taxes. It has been reclassified as an operating expense. The "Income Taxes" data element has been reclassified as the income tax number. This change has been applied to all years of data.
